Adults with behavior problems may be misdiagnosed as ADHD

Print

ADHD experts agree that as many as 70% of parents of ADHD kids indeed display some or many of the behavior traits of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. We estimate this number represents about 5 to 6 million adults-a number that’s probably too low-as many ADHD adults go undetected, undiagnosed and therefore, untreated.

Unfortunately, just as in children and teens labeled as ADHD, probably 45 to 50% of adults who have ADHD-like behavior have been or will be misdiagnosed as ADHD. Many things can mimic or act just like ADHD (called Zebras) and confuse the diagnosis of the “real” medical-social disorder responsible for an adult behavior problem. These might include depression, anxiety, divorce, and alcohol use.

Often, adults suffer the same problems as kids and teens misdiagnosed as ADHD-discrimination-bias-job difficulties-medication side effects.
